More Information
If you want to learn more about varicose veins and our treatments, here are some facts and tips for you:
- Varicose veins are large, dilated blood vessels that are red or bluish in color and protrude above the surface of the skin.
- Varicose veins are commonly associated with symptoms such as leg pain, throbbing and tired legs, ankle ulcers, as well as cramps, heavy legs, burning or itchy areas of the legs, eczema, swelling of the legs, and restless leg syndrome.
- Varicose veins are caused by venous insufficiency, which means that the valves in the veins that prevent blood from flowing backward are not working properly.
- Varicose veins can affect anyone, but they are more common in women, older people, people who are overweight or obese, people who stand or sit for long periods of time, people who have a family history of varicose veins, and people who have had previous blood clots or injuries in their legs.
- Varicose veins can be prevented or reduced by maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, elevating your legs when resting, wearing compression stockings or socks, avoiding tight clothing or shoes that restrict blood flow, avoiding crossing your legs when sitting, and avoiding smoking or drinking alcohol excessively.
- If you suffer from painful varicose veins and are afraid of surgical procedures, we have great news for you! We offer endovenous ablation with laser or radiofrequency, which is the latest in non-surgical treatment for varicose veins. It is a fast and effective procedure with a very short recovery time and very low pain. To determine if you qualify for the procedure, an ultrasound examination is performed.
- Endovenous ablation is performed with a catheter, or small tube, which is inserted through a nick in the skin. Local anesthesia will be given to the point where the incision was made, usually just above or below the knee. The procedure begins by advancing the catheter into the vein up the top of the leg. Anesthesia is applied to the entire length of the vein to be treated. Energy is applied as the catheter is slowly withdrawn. This heats and closes the vein instantly. Blood now begins to flow to healthy veins, relieving and in most cases eliminating symptoms such as pain, tiredness, and cramps.
- After the main trunk varicose vein has been treated with the laser, you can walk freely and return to your normal life the same day after the procedure. Compression stockings should be worn after the procedure to help reduce redness, pain, and ensure the success of the procedure.
- After closing the diseased saphenous veins with laser, we will proceed to treat with foam medication the varicose veins that drained into the now closed saphenous veins. The technique of using agitated medication to foam has proven to be more effective than liquid medication, so we will use an FDA-approved medication, for the treatment of varicose veins with foam.
- Finally, after closing the varicose veins with foam, we will proceed to close all the spider veins in each section, using an FDA-approved foam medication. Keep in mind that more than one session will be necessary in some more severe cases, but usually one to three sessions will suffice in most cases.
